Clayton is a town in Johnston County, North Carolina of approximately 30,000 people. It is located about 20 miles from the capital city Raleigh. Formerly a mainly agricultural town it has attracted a number of industries in recent years, manufacturing, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals to name a few. As the population has grown so too has the Clayton real estate market and it is now home to a wide variety of neighborhoods and home styles.

The Town of Clayton holds events throughout the year, the Downtown Concert Series in Town Square from April to September, Independence Day Street Festival, Clayton Harvest Festival and more. Throughout the town you will find the Clayton Sculpture Trail which features artists from around the country. The Clayton Center is in the former high school and presents Grammy-Award-winning artists and Tony-Award-winning productions. There are fitness and art classes held in the Clayton Community Center and there are many miles of Greenway Trails along the Neuse River for biking, running or a casual stroll.

Homes for sale in Clayton range from smaller single family homes on larger lots to downtown condos, townhomes to large 4 and 5 bedroom homes in amenity rich communities and an ever growing number of homes for sale in active adult neighborhoods. Living in Clayton

The Clayton Parks & Rec Department maintains miles of greenway trails in and around town. The trails have recently been added to and now bike riders and walkers can take the trail right into downtown Clayton. Sam's Branch Greenway is a roughly two mile paved trail with a parking lot at O’Neil Street.The trail connects to the roughly four mile Clayton River Walk on the Neuse which can also be accessed from a parking lot on Covered Bridge Rd.The trails connect with the Wake County Trail system which after about 30 miles lands you at Falls Lake.

There are numerous ball fields and parks for baseball and softball, soccer and rugby. There is a disc golf course, dog park and the harmony playground which allows children of all abilities to play together. The most recent addition is the splash pad and playground at Municipal Park. The Clayton Community Center hosts classes in art, pottery, yoga and gardening to name a few.

The Clayton Center is located in what used to be the Clayton High School which opened in 1915. The multi-use building consists of a 600 seat auditorium, conference center and town government offices. They host a variety of musical and entertainment acts at an affordable price throughout the year. 

The Clayton Farm and Community Market occupies Horne Square in Downtown Clayton every Saturday from 9am-1pm. They have vendors offering organic locally grown fruits and vegetables, pasture raised pork, chicken and beef. Local honey, candles,and baked goods are also available.

Restaurants and Shopping in Clayton.

There are a number of dining/brewery options in and around Clayton, some of which have been around for years, while a new batch of restaurants are expanding the culinary scene. The latest addition is Crawford Cookshop, owned by award winning chef Scott Crawford. Deep River Brewing along with outstanding beers have a rotating cast of food trucks stop by to feed the crowds (dog friendly!). Mannings on Main Street offers rooftop dining while over on Hwy 42 East Mezcalito is packing them in with great food and huge margaritas. 

Most of the major supermarket chains have a presence in Clayton, Food Lion, Harris Teeter, Lowes and Publix. There is also a Wal-Mart in town. Main Street has a number of local small business retail stores and along Hwy 70 there are a number of strip malls. Flowers Crossroads at the intersection of Buffalo Rd and Hwy 42 East is becoming a very convenient spot as the retail options expand.The closest larger shopping center with national department stores would be White Oak in Garner about 15 mins from Clayton. Where you will also find numerous dining options and a cinema. Heading east to Selma you will find the Carolina Premium Outlets along I95 with most of the major retail brands represented.

While primarily a farming community since its inception Clayton has become a major player in the biopharma industry with multi national companies such as Novo Nordisk, Grifols and Bayer establishing manufacturing and research plants in town. Caterpillar, the leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment employs hundreds of workers at its plant in Clayton and is a strong supporter of the town. Located about halfway between New York and Florida and a short drive to I95 Clayton is ideally located on the Eastern Seaboard. Some of the biggest companies in the world have operations in Research Triangle Park home to thousands of workers and a short drive from Clayton. Major universities like Duke, UNC Chapel Hill and NC State also call the region home and provide the area with world class talented graduates, many of whom decide to stay. There are many more small to medium sized businesses in the numerous business zones around Clayton. The latest development aims to make the western side of town the gateway to Clayton, the Lumen Planned Development District is located at the intersection of US Highway 70 Bypass and NC Highway 42. Plans call for office, medical, retail with apartments, townhomes and single family homes. Raleigh Durham International Airport is located about a forty five minute drive from Clayton with over fifty domestic direct flights and six international flights.

Johnston County Schools operate the public schools for Clayton and the county. Most of the  schools currently operate on a traditional calendar schedule. Students are assigned to a school based on a boundary map that includes the address of the student. There are many excellent schools in the system and it is common for parents to want to live in a neighborhood that feeds into the schools they like. With the growth of the student population over recent years they have built new schools to try and keep up, but certain schools are capped but only for residents who do not live within that schools boundary map.  We always suggest contacting the school system directly to make sure the house you're buying is in the right school assignment. Things To Do Near Clayton

Clemmons Educational State Forest is minutes from Downtown Clayton and is a great way to spend a few hours. There are a number of trails, from the talking tree trail (.6 mile) to the more adventurous watershed extension loop (3 miles). Great picnic tables and grills available. 

Bailey and Sarah Williamson Preserve is a 400 acre farm and nature preserve located at 4409 Mial Plantation Road, Raleigh, NC 27610. It is also accessible from the Clayton Riverwalk Trail.Enjoy seven miles of multi use trails through farms and forests. Walkers, Bike riders and runners are welcome.

Atkinson Milling Company Museum is located at 95 Atkinson Mill Rd, Selma, NC 27576 where you can take a tour of the old mill. There is a working demonstration of how the old mill used to operate and see how the owner Ray Wheeler has restored and preserved a great bit of history. 

The Beach Or The Mountains?

Clayton is only about two and a half hours from the beach and about four hours from the mountains of Western North Carolina.In fact a lot of beach traffic goes through Clayton on their way to Wrightsville, Carolina Beach, Morehead City and Emerald Isle. With the beach so close you could make a midweek day trip from Clayton and miss the crowds.

Sport In Clayton.

There is no shortage of college flags, banners, bumper stickers everywhere you go in North Carolina and Clayton is no different. Surrounded by a good number of colleges and universities whose graduates have made Clayton home you can expect to see flags from NC State, UNC Chapel Hill, Duke, ECU, App State, Shaw and more in nearly every neighborhood around here, sometimes two in one house...”the house divided” Basketball is the number one sport for most of these fans, with football, baseball and softball fans just as passionate. The Carolina Hurricanes hockey team calls Raleigh home as does the women's professional soccer team North Carolina Courage. For professional football you have to go to Charlotte and if you have a favorite team from another state chances are there is a supporters group nearby.. If golf is your sport, Pinehurst is about an hour and a half drive from Clayton but you will find countless golf courses much closer to home. With year round play possible there is no shortage of golf courses in the Triangle to choose from. Top Golf and Drive Shack have both recently opened in the Triangle.
